21st IYQ Talk – Sir Roger Penrose
Sir Roger Penrose, Physics Nobel Laureate from the University of Oxford, UK, will deliver the 21st talk of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) series at TCG CREST. His talk, “Collapse of the Quantum Wave-function: Influences from both Special and General Relativity”, will offer insights into his perspective on the intersection of quantum theory and relativity.
Talk Title – Collapse of the Quantum Wave-function: Influences from both Special and General Relativity
Speaker: Sir Roger Penrose, Physics Nobel Laureate, University of Oxford, UK
Date & Time: 25 September 2025, 3:30 PM IST
Venue: Classroom-4, TCG CREST, Kolkata, India
Abstract:
Einstein’s principle of equivalence, when applied to a quantum system described by the Schrödinger equation, leads to the emergence of a peculiar time-cubed phase factor. This term appears inconsistent with the macroscopic quantum superposition principle, implying a finite lifetime for such superpositions—an idea initially proposed by Lajos Diósi. For this lifetime to align with special relativity, one encounters a fascinating divide between classical and quantum notions of physical reality, where classical reality can be determined, but quantum reality can only be experimentally confirmed.
